PostSubject: Arrow velocities   Wed Jan 12, 2011 11:20 pm

Here is an interesting one for all the technical guys out there.

I have two sets of arrows, one set bought and cut to my length, and one aquired along with a recent bow trade.
Both are 340 n-fused Epics. similarly fletched ( sorry no FOB's YET).
Bow is set on 60#.
Set 1 : Length = 31.29 " with 125 gr field points . Total arrow weight = 475 gr
Set 2 : Length = 33" with 100 gr field points. Total arrow weight = 479 gr

Almost no appereciable difference in weights.
NOW COMES THE MYSTERY -- at least to me.

Chronograph readings taken 6 feet in front of bow.
Set 1 : Avg speeds of 3 arrows = 235 fps.
Set 2 : Avg speed of 3 arrows = 248 fps.

How come ??

Should set # 1, the shorter, lighter arrows not have given the fastest readings ? .

Any thoughts on this one would be welcome.

Thinking out loud:

1) Nock tightness. switch them around and check again
2) the heavier arrow has more retained energy than the lighter one off the bow it may have more momentun in the near distance. Check gain at 15 yard.
3) although they look identical, the fletching may have more drag on the lighter arrow.

Interesting...Longer arrows carry better but I do not think you would see anything that close. My guess is the spin difference between set ups is the cause.

Did you get muzzle speed as well? Fun stuff

I think #1 and #3 are probably the best explanations.
As for #2, the lighter arrow would have more velocity at the start and less downrange due to the heavier arrow's momentum. HOWEVER, only 4gr difference would mean maybe 1fps, not 13fps.
